What is Cursillo?

The CURSILLO is a worldwide movement of the Christian Church which strives to penetrate and Christianize environments through Christian communitites in action. It proposes no new type of spirituality, but simply a method through which one's spirituality may be developed, lived and shared, in any area of human life where there are Christians willing to dedicate their lives to God in an on-going manner
.
CURSILLO (pronounced kur-see-yo) works to form a group of men and women who are Christian leaders and who will provide a backbone for Christian life in the world. Cursillo is designed to make it possible to live what is fundamental for being a Christian - to live in union with Christ.

CURSILLO is a Spanish word meaning 'little or short course.' The 3-day Cursillo weekend provides a living experience - meeting Christ, meeting fellow Christians and experiencing how they live. It begins on a Thursday evening and ends on the following Sunday afternoon. During these 3 days, those attending live and work together, listening to and discussing talks given by priests and lay people. The talks on the weekend have the specific purpose of presenting a vision of the Christian life, and therefore, do not provide a general introduction to Christianity or a summary of all Christian doctrine.

The basic atmosphere of a Cursillo weekend differs from the individual solitude of a retreat. During the 3-days, the teachings of Christ are discussed in a climate of joy. The talks and discussions are interspersed with prayer, Eucharists, songs, recreation, laughter and moments of reflection and silence. There is nothing dull about a Cursillo weekend! It is full of work enjoyed in the name of Jesus Christ. It is a joyous workshop in the fundamentals of our beautiful Christian faith where everyone learns by experiencing a living Christian community.

A CURSILLO weekend is an encounter with Christ. If that is understood, then the power beauty, and joy of the Cursillo movement will be understood. The Cursillo method described on the weekend provides a means to continue the Christian growth after the weekend. The resulting Christian community is a group of men and women who live the Christian life, linked together in Christ, and are supported in their environment.

Clausura for Cursillo #100

MISSISSIPPI EPISCOPAL CURSILLO 100

We came to Cursillo for the things we had heard;
Curious about that rooster and the things that occurred.

When we first arrived, how the Cha-Cha’s they thrived;
We met these strange people who seemed so revived.

Wondering the great mysteries that must lay ahead;
We completed the first evening with naught to be said.

We then heard the Rollos that stated the case;
Soon we would know it was all in God’s Grace.

We began singing songs with such a great zeal;
To we Episcopalians, that was such a big deal!

We took off our masks and let down our guards;
We laid on the table all of our cards.

We yet kept on singing like you’d never believe;
We held hands together and felt so relieved.

Cursillo, this weekend that has been quite great;
Reminded to study, to pray and meditate.

For those of you who were not here on Saturday night;
You missed our new Bishop beaming his true light.

We are so blessed to have a great Bishop who missed not a minute;
Every activity, he had to be in it.

We received the glorious palancas to such a surprise;
They touched our hearts and opened our eyes.

We wouldn’t start anything until all were accounted;
Our Rector he showed how persistence surmounted.

That bus that broke down, the one that never existed;
It’s really okay, ‘cause now we’re enlisted.

We do understand that it’s not an event;
Knowing it’s a journey for which we’ve been sent.

De Colores and Christ’s Peace are now things we say;
We shall go forth with Grace and follow His way.

Now our eyes are opened and we now understand;
One can’t describe Cursillo, experience it demands.

We are joined now together, the body of Christ;
Moving forward as Christians, into the world, into life.

Soon we will leave and go our separate ways;
But we shall be back here for that fourth day!

We are Cursillo 100, our hearts have been softened;
We are friends now for life, we hope to see often.

De Colores!
