Vestry Meeting Minutes

May 8 , 2002

Vestry members present: Ann Homer Cook, Senior Warden; Stuart Burgess, Junior Warden; Scott Carter; Don Long; Brooks Mosley; Cathy Stroud; and David Wilson.

Others present: David Christian, Priest-in-Charge; Don Chancellor, Co-Chair 2002 Day in the Country; and Jeannine Barrett, Clerk.

David Christian opened the meeting with prayers and Bible study.

Update on a Day in the Country. Don Chancellor gave an update of the status of the 2002 Day in the Country. Most of the chairpersons have been selected, with the exception of the Kids Country chair. Ann Homer Cook suggested that the new confirmands be contacted to encourage them to help as needed. There will be a Memphis in May-sponsored barbeque contest, named "Heavenly Hogs," which will be conducted on Friday and Saturday. The contest will be limited to thirty teams, which is a manageable number, and should bring an additional 1000 - 5000 people to Day in the Country.

Approval of Minutes. The April minutes were approved as distributed.

Treasurer's Report. The Operating Budget vs Actual for January through April 2002 was distributed and discussed.

Proposed Compensation Range for New Rector. David Christian gave an update on the search process for a new rector. When the listing for a new rector went to the deployment office, the compensation range was one item that was used as a "filter" to determine candidates. Clergy compensation is divided into two basic categories: stipend and housing. These figures are used for comparison in profiling for the search process. The search committee previously determined a range for the compensation figures to be used for the initial screening process and would like to have that range approved by the vestry. Brooks Mosley made a motion that the compensation range previously determined by the search committee be approved. Cathy Stroud seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Election of Annual Council Delegates. Ann Homer Cook announced that it is time to elect delegates for the 2003 annual council. The requirements are that the delegates be at least 18 years old and communicants of the parish. The dates for the 2003 council are January 31 through February 2. There need to be three delegates and up to three alternates elected. Names of persons who have expressed an interest in serving were mentioned: delegates - Larry Stroud, Frances Christian and Gibson Sims; for alternates - Brooks Mosley and Ann Homer Cook. It was suggested that vestry members determine people who might be interested in serving for the annual council and that the determination of those persons be put on the June agenda.

Interim Rector. David Johnson has relayed the Bishop's desire that the Chapel have an interim rector for at least a portion of the remainder of the search process. David Christian is comfortable with being Priest-in-Charge and having no interim rector; however, the Bishop has some concerns about the long-term effect if there is no interim rector. Ann Homer Cook and David Christian have met with the Bishop and plan to do so again if necessary. Ann Homer Cook recommended that the vestry think about the issue of utilizing an interim rector and bring the matter up again at the June meeting.

Discussion of Characteristics of a Program-sized Parish. Ann Homer Cook distributed copies of a booklet entitled Sizing up a Congregation for New Member Ministry by Arlin J. Rothauge and asked that the vestry members read and think about it in relation to the growth that has occurred and will occur with the parish.

Ann Homer Cook reported on the following items of information:

Entergy has determined that the electrical lines which presently run down Gluckstadt Road and across the Chapel property will not be able to accommodate the Reunion development. In connection with installation of the new electricity lines, some trees on the Chapel property will have to be cut and some of the ditches will be cleaned out. New plants and trees will be put in afterwards.

All items in connection with the listening forum have been taken care of except planning a social function for the entire parish. A dinner on the ground is being scheduled for June 9, and the Chapel is tentatively scheduled in March, 2003 for a day at Camp Bratton-Green.

An audit committee report was distributed and a report from the audit committee will be on the June agenda.

Ann Homer Cook reported that efforts are being made to get the cemetery deeds in order. It was pointed out that a policy regarding guidelines for the cemetery should be finalized and enforced. Any such policy would need to begin as a recommendation from the cemetery committee.

Brooks Mosley advised that the capital funds are not coming in as they should. Announcements should be made in order to remind people about the capital funds contributions.

David Wilson reported that copies of the drawings which were utilized during Terry Eason's presentation will be made available.

The meeting was adjourned with prayer.
