Special Vestry Meeting

July 28, 2002

Vestry members present: Ann Homer Cook, Senior Warden; Linda Ross Aldy; Scott Carter; Al Doty; Don Long; Cathy Stroud; and David Wilson.

Others present: Jeannine Barrett, Clerk.

Ann Homer Cook opened the meeting with prayer and presided over the meeting.

This meeting with the the Vestry and representatives of the various Committees was held pursuant to the decision at the July 14, 2002 special meeting of the Vestry regarding the 2002 budget. Ann Homer Cook reported on the current status of the budget deficit. The deficit currently stands at $64,000 for 2002. By year-end, without a change, the deficit would be approximately $100,000.

Options regarding the budget were presented and discussed, including:

  • Cutting items on the budget;
  • Not cutting items on the budget;
  • Continue operating as is and use available reserves;
  • A combination of cutting the budget and using reserves;
  • Using volunteers for positions that are currently contract status;
  • Assume increased giving in November and December will adjust the budget.

Ann Homer Cook asked that, after a week of prayer and thought, the Committee Chairs look at their budgets to determine what cuts might be made and then get in touch with the appropriate person on the Vestry to advise them of same.

Reports of the overall budget and budgets by committees were distributed and discussed.

A discussion was held regarding what items on the budget might be reduced and ways that income might be increased.

Ann Homer Cook reported that the following budget items had already been cut:

  • Seminary pledge;
  • Diocesan pledge;
  • $1,000 for vestry retreat;
  • Supply priests - cut to $2,000 instead of $3,000
  • The Rector's Discretionary Fund can be cut some.

Various persons suggested ways to improve areas of concern within the Parish that should be addressed. The vestry members in attendance added their comments, including: Al Doty - there is a need for increased giving; Don Long - possibly focusing on the positive would bring positive results; Cathy Stroud - exploring the possibility of scheduling a motivational speaker.

After closing comments from Ann Homer Cook, the meeting was adjourned with prayer.
