Stewpot
Community Services
Because
of the high degree of accountability and success of Stewpot's
ministries, the Chapel is involved with this mission in numerous
ways, including providing funds for particular projects and as general
support.
Serve
Lunch at Stewpot - Chapel volunteers will be serving lunch at
the Jackson Stewpot Community Center during one week of each month.
There is a short worship service at 11:30 a.m. Those unable to attend
the service are asked to arrive by 11:45, and their work will be
concluded by 12:30 p.m. Watch for the sign-up poster. Contact Frank
Spencer, our Deacon and Stewpot Executive Director, if you have
questions.
Stewpot
in Canton - an idea born out of the Chapel's Servant Ministry
- is now open! The Chapel is now on the schedule to serve lunch
on the third Tuesday of each month. Please mark your calendar and
join in supporting this ministry. Stewpot is located at 505 S. Union.
From I-55, take Highway 22 into Canton. When you reach the Square,
take a right on Union Street. Go 4-5 blocks to Gymnasium Building
next to St. Paul AME Zion Church on left. The phone nubmer is 859-1904.
The
Chapel family has become known at Stewpot in Jackson as "the
peanut butter people" because of our special project of providing
peanut butter on a continuing basis. Please remember to pick up
peanut butter at the store and place it in the collection basket
outside the Chapel before services.
The
Chapel also provides funds for the Stewpot kids for meals and educational
materials during their summer camp, and we provide periodic food,
gifts and funds upon special request.
For
Thanksgiving, we provide funds for families on a coordinated needs
list administered through Stewpot, plus Thanksgiving meal packages
for need family.
Each
summer, we hold a Stewpot Picnic with kids and adults from Stewpot
enjoying an afternoon of sunshine, worship, music, fishing, grilled
burgers, crafts and fellowship at the Chapel.
More
than 60 Christian congregations, one Jewish and one Muslim congregation,
as well as hundreds of individuals, institutions, and businesses
support the Stewpot, headquartered in the Central Urban Ministry
Center at 1100 West Capitol Street. The volunteers and staff members
are people of faith who are committed to helping our needy brothers
and sisters.
Through
counseling, shelters, food and clothing services, community development
projects, and children's programs, Stewpot staff and volunteers
work to help people find decent housing, jobs, and childcare while
providing them with basic necessities. A sampling of Stewpot's ministries
is listed below.
Community
Kitchen
This ministry provides a hot noon meal to the needy and homeless.
More than 100 people a day are fed, both physically and spiritually.
Volunteers are needed everyday to help serve our guests.
Food
Pantry
The Pantry provides a four-day supply of food for carefully screened
applicants. It is stocked through donations from supporters, and
volunteers help staff it by sorting, stocking and bagging groceries
for the families who seek help.
Sims
House
The Sims House is a transitional shelter for women and their children
who are fleeing abusive situations. Over the course of a 90-day
stay, the Sims House helps these women prepare for a return to
independent living. Participants are required to find employment,
learn about financial planning and money management, help with
chores around the house, and participate in group and individual
therapy with a licensed family counselor.
Matt's
House
This emergency shelter provides a safe environment to more than
300 women and children each year who have no other place to call
home. The staff assists residents in finding housing, employment
or to transition back to their families. Volunteers are needed
to provide an evening meal once a month or transportation to special
events.
Billy
Brumfield House
The Billy Brumfield House is an emergency shelter for men, which
provides services for more than 700 individuals each year. It
serves as emergency shelter for homeless men, provides an alcohol
and drug rehabilitation program, provides room and board for disabled
men, and helps them to find permanent housing. Volunteers are
needed to provide meals once a month.
Clothing
Closet
The Clothing Closet is stocked with donated clothing which is
distributed to the needy who come to the Stewpot for assistance.
Neighborhood
Children's Program
Stewpot's Neighborhood Children's Program offers both an after
school program and a summer camp for elementary, junior high and
high school students. Throughout the year, more than 200 children
are given educational assistance and presented with positive role
models, generally resulting in higher self-esteem and plenty of
good, wholesome fun for all. Anyone with a love for children will
find ample opportunity to share their gifts here. Art projects,
field trips, reading to children, tutoring, and mentoring are
needed every day.
