Theology Study Group

Alston Johnson leads this lecture and discussion group which meets on the fourth Sunday of each month from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Library.

The group is studying these books by Alistair McGrath, Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University:

  • Christian Theology: An Introduction - Fourth Edition (known as the Blue Book). This book introduces and explains the following aspects of Christian theology:
    • its leading ideas;
    • how those ideas are developed and defended;
    • its basic vocabulary, especially technical terms;
    • the key debates that have influenced Christan thinking during the last 2000 years; and
    • the leading thinkers who have shaped Christian theology down the centuries.
  • Christian Theology Reader - Third Edition (known as the Red Book). This book introduces the key ideas, personalities, and schools of thought within Christian theology by direct engagement with original theological texts. Each text is accompanied by an introduction to set the reading in context, a commentary to explain key issues and significance of the reading, and a set of study questions.

The assignment for the November meeting is:

  • Christian Theology: An Introduction Chapter 9 (The Doctrine of God) - begin on page 219 and read through page 242
  • Christian Theology Reader - read Moltmann and Kung in the Suggested Readings listed in the gray box on "Does God Suffer?" on page 176
